Religion and the Public Square, Part 1
Derry Church member Joel Ario says that the relationship between church and state has been contentious throughout American history. Today he takes on this topic by presenting the first part of a timely two-week Issues Class series at Derry Presbyterian Church.
Joel considers himself to be "an armchair theologian with just enough training to be dangerous." His education includes St. Olaf College (BA), Harvard Divinity School (MDiv) and Harvard Law School (JD). He started his career as a public interest lawyer and currently serves as Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner. His perspective on church and state can be summed up as, "I believe in the separation of church and state and the inseparability of faith and politics."

Journey of the Psalms

Bill Carter, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit and co-founder of the Presbybop Quartet, will share musical discoveries from his recent pastoral sabbatical to the Outer Hebrides islands of Scotland: how Celtic psalm singing may have been the musical forbear of Gospel music and American jazz.

Meet John Calvin
This lecture was originally presented at Derry Presbyterian Church on Sunday, September 7. When the recording failed, Dr. Lee Barrett graciously agreed to re-record his program for our "Year of John Calvin."
Lee C. Barrett, III is the Mary B. and Henry P. Stager Chair in Theology and Professor of Systematic Theology at Lancaster Theological Seminary.
John Calvin was the most influential character in the origin of the Reformed theological tradition that informs the Presbyterian heritage. In a way, he is Presbyterianism's primary parent. As with any parent, his children have remembered him with a complicated mixture of adoration and aversion, praising him for all the virtues of the heritage and blaming him for all its faults. His piety and personality lives on in the way Presbyterians think, worship, pray, engage in mission, and conduct church life. This lecture sets the stage for an investigation of the life, thought, and legacy of this monumental figure who bequeathed his deepest yearnings, anxieties, hopes, and fears to his spiritual descendants.

Calvin and the Bible: Part 1
Our introduction to John Calvin continues with a four-week series on "Calvin and the Bible" led by Rev. Charles "Buz" Myers, Ph.D, faculty member in the Religion Department at Gettysburg College. John Calvin believed that all of life should be based on what the Bible says. Calvin wrote commentaries on most of the books of the Bible, produced several editions of his Institutes of the Christian Religion, and composed catechisms--all in an attempt to explain what the Bible has to say about the Christian faith. Calvin’s understanding of the Bible and its place in the Church and in the lives of believers has shaped Reformed thinking and practice ever since.
