The Amish Study

Using the Old Order Amish as the research population, in 1983 Abe and his team published the finding that Bipolar Disorder has a genetic basis. This led to findings about the genetic origin of multiple psychiatric disorders, and was the first to prove that a psychiatric disorder is inherited. Abe identifies the unique religious values and practices of the Old Order Amish that helped to make this type of advanced research so productive.
